Week 1 Introduction: My Journey

Hey everyone! My name is Jordan Wiebe and I am currently a senior here at OU from Muskogee, Oklahoma. I am a Health and Exercise Science Major with a Minor in Biology. I am currently in the secondary application process for medical school and have been accepted to a school in North Carolina so far! I am beyond ecstatic to have the opportunity to start the next chapter in my life and learn the arts of holistic medicine. I have only applied to osteopathic schools after having read the book, "The DOs: Osteopathic Medicine in America," by Norman Gevitz. I did not know much about the differences and similarities between osteopathic and allopathic medicine until discovering Gevitz's book and learning about the history and principles of the osteopathic profession. My hope is that one day I will be able to work rural areas to provide medical attention for those who need it most.

In my leisure time (what little I do have), I volunteer at a non-profit coffee shop on Campus Corner called Second Wind Coffeehouse. Working there has given me the chance to learn a really neat skill in creating gourmet espresso drinks and has also allowed me to meet a variety of wonderful people.

For a bit of a deeper look into my personal life, I am the eldest of three kids with a brother in his senior year of high school and a sister in the 8th grade. I also have one adorable dachshund named Buddy who is almost twelve years old and is pretty much my child! I have been to eight countries outside the United States so far and absolutely love traveling and experiencing new cultures and idea.

Well, that's a little dive into my life and I hope you enjoyed getting to know me a little bit better. I look forward to reading everyone's writing assignments throughout the semester!

  1. Nice to meet you Jordan! Congrats on making it to your senior year at OU! I see your picture was taken in Haiti. What exactly did you do there? The Netherlands would be an awesome place to visit. I hope you are able to one day so you can meet your family! I hope you are enjoying the class so far.

  2. It is so good to get to know you Jordan! We seem to have similar paths which is awesome to find during an online class. I definitely know the struggles of pursuing a career in the medical field and can not wait, like you, to get there! I am very interested in that book by Norman Gevitz. I may have to check that one out, thanks for sharing!! Good luck with applying to med school :)

  3. Oh, I am so intrigued by what I have read about osteopathy, Jordan - that sounds really exciting! And listen, maybe you could do your project for this class about the Netherlands: that would be so cool! It is a beautiful part of the world, and it also has some great storytelling traditions. So think about that when you are brainstorming about your Storybook - this book for example, Dutch Fairy Tales, might be something you would enjoy! :-)

  4. I've been busy applying to Medical Schools too! What D.O. schools are you applying to? I'm going to be honest, I don't know anything about the difference between a D.O. and M.D. However, I think it is awesome that you want to use your skills for helping those that need it most! I hope you get accepted to your dream school! Good luck with everything!

    1. If you are curious about the differences between the two, you should definitely read the book my Gevitz that I mentioned in my introduction! I am applying to Oklahoma State, Lincoln Memorial in TN, Campbell in NC, Nova in FL, Lake Erie in FL, A.T. Stills in AZ, Midwestern in AZ, and I'm debating on OU in OH. How about yourself?

  5. Hi Jordan,

It's nice to meet you via your blog! I, like many others, are very impressed by your choice to follow the medical career path. I am sure that your obvious passion for the field will do you well in your endeavors. I hope you're enjoying class so far and I look forward to continuing to work with you throughout the semester.
    Best,
    Mackenzie

  6. Hey there,
I am once again surrounded by very smart people. Most of my friends tend to be science majors going into the medical field. I'm sure you'll get in this time around. During your bike rides have you ever been to the Urban Wilderness? It's this really neat place down 12th street a few streets past Alameda that is literally just a block of wilderness. It's got bike and walking trails, woods, a lake, a prairie, and it's smack dab between main streets so even if you get lost off the trail you can always just walk in one direction till you hit a road. It's a pretty fantastic place.

  7. Hey Jordan! That’s awesome that you want to be a doctor. I hope you get in this year! I think it’s surprising and interesting that you decided you wanted to get a DO degree rather than an MD degree, since most people traditionally try for an MD degree. It makes me want to read the book that changed your mind. And that’s great that you love to explore Norman! There’s always something new to see in every place you're at. Speaking of traveling, that’s awesome that you still have family in the Netherlands. Can you understand/speak any Dutch? And out of the countries you’ve been to, which was your favorite? All of the places you've been seem really interesting, so I'd imagine it would be hard to choose a favorite.

  8. Nice to meet you Jordan! It was nice to get to read through your introduction. I am also a Health and Exercise Science major; however, I am not being quite as ambitious as you are. So kudos to you on applying to med school!
Also, kind of random, but do you know Carl Cordero and Josiah Irwin? They are a couple of my good friends, and I know they are from Muskogee as well!

  9. Hey Jordan! It is nice to meet you! I am also a Health and Exercise major. However, I recently changed my major so I am currently in the application for the major phase. I have high respect for you and your ambition to become a doctor. I bet you will be amazing! Good luck to you and all your endeavors!

  10. Hey Jordan, good to meet'chya! It never ceases to amaze me how many places so many of my fellow students have been. I'm a non-traditional student, which, if I'm not mistaken, you've already read on my introduction. I think it's fantastic that you younger students have got such a drive to experience other cultures. It's also pretty remarkable how many of you have a desire to to help others.

In regards to pets, I haven't met anyone's dog yet that isn't the biggest baby in the family. I don't know how it happens, but size seems to make no difference. Our tiny Yorkie is rotten to the core and my Aunt's German Shepherd has her very own spot on the couch.

I think it's fantastic that you're applying to med school to further your education, what a great jumping start to your career and life. I wish you all the best for all your endeavors. With your determination and drive, I'm sure you'll accomplish all the goals that you have set for yourself!!! GOOD LUCK!!! :)

  11. Hi Jordan! I am always excited to meet (well sorta meet) my fellow science major strugglers. I was pre med until very (very) recently when I decided that med school just wasn't for me. I would really like to read the book you mentioned. It sounds fascinating! I love reading interesting things about medicine and the history of it all so I think I could get into it! Good luck with your applications!

  12. It was great to learn a little about you, Jordan! I am also wanting to go into the medical field--D.O. programs are a great decision. You seem like a very well-rounded person and a good writer too. I can't wait to read more of your stories! Good luck in everything you do in the future!

  13. Hey Jordan, congratulations on almost being done with school! You had me intrigued and I had to look up what the differences were between osteopathic and allopathic medicine. I did not know much about osteopathic medicine at all. That is such an awesome picture of you in Haiti. Good luck with the medical school application! Life is getting pretty exciting.

  14. Hello Jordan! As you've said it's always nice to see another Pre-Med student! I love that you are primarily looking into DO schools, and good luck in this application process. I hope you get in! I don't think many people go into medicine wanting to practice in a rural area, and I think that is awesome as well. I absolutely love dachsund's, and I bet Buddy is adorable! By observing your image, on your post, I think that it is so cool that you were able to do an apprenticeship in Haiti. Doing an apprenticeship is something I have always wanted to do, but never had the time. I hope you're enjoying this semester!

  15. Hi Jordan, Congratulations on your acceptance into medical school. It takes a lot of hard work to get there and even more thereafter. I am sure you are super excited to graduate and start the new chapter in your life. I think it is so awesome that you took the time to research your future career in detail. Good luck with it all.

  16. Hi, Jordan!! To be honest the first paragraph went way over my head. Now I have some new medical terms to google! And that's shameful since both of my parents are nurses and I work in a hospital (in the gift shop though). Whoops!

I had no clue Second Wind existed. That's something else that I need to look up because I've never heard of a non-profit coffee shop. :O Sounds like a nice creative outlet! I hope you have a great semester and a fantastic time in med school. :D

  17. That is really cool that you have become so passionate about going to a DO school and becoming a doctor in a rural community. I have been to Second Wind before, and I think it is a very cool concept and a great way to raise money. The hot chocolate that I had there was one of the better ones I have had while in college. I hope that you enjoy your time left in Oklahoma before you possibly leave for medical school!

  18. Jordan!

It was great to meet you via blog! I haven't read your introduction yet so I was excited to read more about someone new in our class. Your medical aspirations are awesome and that is so exciting that you have been accepted into one school already! I wish you the best of the luck in your last year here at OU.

  19. Hi Jordan! Your excitement for the future is great. To work in a rural area would be so fulfilling. I also love traveling. The amount of countries you've been to is very impressing. The only place outside the U.S. I have been is Australia and I loved it. I hope to travel more in the next few years. Nice 'meeting' you and good luck with the rest of your semester!

  20. Jordan, I think it is so great that you have such a passion for your future career and have things so figured out, as well! It looks like you have got a lot of good experience, as well as insight and knowledge into your career path and where you want to be! That's awesome!

I am also jealous of all the countries you have gotten a chance to visit! 8 is quite a lot and I am sure that has provided you with a lot of really cool experiences.

Hope you enjoy your last year at OU, and I look forward to reading your work!

  21. Hello!
Wow, congratulations on getting into med school! That is amazing, I bet you're excited that the accepting process is over though, I know several people that are applying to med school and the stress they're under makes it seem like a nightmare!
I also have a dachshund her name is Slick, and I also like to travel! I have only been to five other countries though. I am planning on traveling a little bit more after I graduate this year though! Which countries have you been to then?
It was great getting to learn a little bit about you! Good luck in med school next year! :)

  22. Hi Jordan!

Wow congrats on getting accepted in North Carolina! I have no idea what either of those two types of medicines are, but that's one of the signs as to why I won't be a doctor :) haha it's awesome you worked in Haiti this past summer! My family volunteers there every January. It's always a humbling experience. Also, you work at second wind? Cool! I'm the Childcare Director at the church Second Wind is associated with! Small world :) Enjoy the rest of your the at OU!
